Large businesses often need a clearer view of emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 categories. Scope 3 should be handled carefully because data quality can vary significantly between categories and suppliers.

• Scope 1: direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as fleet, fuels or refrigerants.
• Scope 2: emissions from purchased electricity and other purchased energy where applicable.
• Scope 3: relevant wider value-chain emissions where suitable data is available and the category is useful to the reporting purpose.

We do not imply that every Scope 3 category can be fully reported for every organisation. Where Scope 3 data is estimated, incomplete or supplier-dependent, the reporting output should explain that clearly.
